An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Lifetime of Memories
York, PA --- During a time when more than eight million defective multi-use baby seats are being recalled by most of the major baby equipment mfrs., an innovative, user-friendly infant carrier hits the market with its main focus on child safety and ease of use. And what corporate giant is behind this lightweight, phenomenal creation? Absolutely none! The brainpower and motivation behind the See Shell Baby Carrier belong to Sharon Abendschoen, a York, Pennsylvania grandmother.
Following the birth of her (Abendschoen’s) first grandchild, her daughter-in-law found the bulky car seat/baby carrier combo to be heavy and difficult to manage. Abendschoen remembered the lightweight baby carrier she used for her own children 30 years before. Through active research, she learned this type of carrier had been discontinued and replaced by the now popular multi-purpose car seat/carrier. She immediately set out to successfully patent her invention and locate a manufacturer to build her See Shell Baby Carrier, a low-profile, seashell-shaped design weighing in at under six pounds.
Unlike ‘big name’ car seat manufacturers that conduct all of their safety testing in-house, the See Shell Baby Carrier has been tested for design safety by ACTS Testing Labs, an independent consumer safety laboratory in Buffalo, New York. Abendschoen confirms, "This was done to reassure that our design innovations have, indeed, added to the safety of our infant carrier." On September 17, 2002, the See Shell Baby Carrier passed the Handle Integrity portion, along with many other important sections of the latest ASTM Spec F2050.00 for Hand Held Infant
Carriers. The carrier’s handle is made from strong, yet lightweight, metal alloy as opposed to plastic materials used by manufacturers of popular car seat carriers in today’s marketplace. The See Shell handle is covered in a 1/4" thick polyfoam sleeve for ease in carrying, greatly reducing the strain on the arms and back.
Its patented features include a seven-position handle adjustment with safety stop to avoid a lurching motion, vertical-position handle that acts as a roll cage to protect baby should an accident occur, three-point safety restraint straps and the Tri-lockster buckle (just released to the marketplace in 2000) that easily releases the shoulder straps in one quick motion. In addition, the "inclining" as opposed to "reclining" seat feature makes the See Shell a great feeding seat for babies, especially those with reflux disorder.
