| Looking
for an innovative baby product that is FUN and FUNCTIONAL too?
You've found in in the See Shell Baby Carrier! This is Catalogue Mom's
second review of the See Shell. The inventor and grandmom behind the
business, Sharon Abendschoen, was kind enough to send us a See
Shell to try out last fall. Since there were no babies around our
house at the time, we sent it off to a local Mom's Club for testing.

In February, we welcomed our newest
Catalogue Mom "staff member", Patrick Ian.
Since then, he's become a major influence in our product testing
division (and scheduling department as well).
Now that we've had a chance to use
the See Shell ourselves, we must completely concur with the "thumbs
up" given by our Moms Club testers! The
lightweight design definitely beats the bulky car seat carrier, it's
safe (very important), the design makes it easy to get Patick in and
out of, and (equally important) it's just plain cute! |

Sharon
Abendschoen.. The Grandmother of Invention
See
Shell Baby Carrier
by creator and exclusive agent, "See Shell Baby Products, LLC"
You've
no doubt heard the phrase, "necessity is the mother of
invention" and never was a better example than Sharon Abendschoen of
York, Pennsylvania and her marvelous See Shell Baby Carrier! When
Sharon's granddaughter was born, she searched high and low for a
lightweight baby carrier similar to the one she had used with her own
children 30 years prior. She was dismayed to find that such a carrier no
longer existed and was disappointed with the bulky, awkward, and heavy
carrier / carseat combinations marketed today. So she set to work
inventing a solution to the problem. Safety and comfort for both baby and
caregiver were Sharon's top design priorities. The result is the See Shell
Baby Carrier.
The See Shell weighs in at under 6 lbs, reducing the amount of
weight you carry by at least 35%, as typical carriers on the market weigh
8 lbs or more! A "low profile" design means you carry
your baby closer to your body, saving strain on your arms and back. On
September 17, 2002, the See Shell Baby Carrier passed the very important
Handle Integrity Test and other important portions of the latest ASTM
Spec. F2050.01 for Hand Held Baby Carriers. This test was conducted by an
independent testing lab, ACTS Testing Labs of Buffalo, NY. See Shell Baby
Products, LLC is now confident to offer a TRULY safe infant carrier for
your baby.
We wanted the inside scoop on this Mom-invented product, so we
asked Sharon if we could put the See Shell Baby Carrier to the test.
We rounded up a few parent and baby volunteers to try out the See Shell.
Here's what our road testers tell us sets the See Shell Baby Carrier apart
from other carriers on the market.
 |
Comfort
and ease of carrying baby. The shape and cushion of the
handle in combination with the narrower width of the base really
does make a big difference in carrying comfort. Many parents are
familiar with the bruised hips and thighs that come from typical
carrier designs. Our testers all agreed there are multiple
comfortable carrying positions with the See Shell and that the
decreased weight is also noticeable. The handle can be adjusted to
seven positions to further "customize" the way you hold
the carrier. |
Several
testers also noted that the adjustable handle bar is useful for mounting
stroller and crib toys designed for babies to watch, kick, and grab. Many
typical carseat carrier handles only move to the rear of the carrier and
the forward position is too close to baby's face for mounting toys.

Ease
of adjusting the straps. We put babies from 3 weeks to 6
months in the carrier and found that changing the strap lengths
and positions was a breeze. As all parents know, babies can grow
literally overnight, so this is a big benefit. The See Shell has 3
shoulder as well as 3 crotch strap positions. Adjusting the straps
is as simple as lifting a lever, loosening or moving the strap,
and then pressing the lever closed again. One of our testers
pointed out that this would also greatly benefit grandparents or
other caregivers that often use the carrier for different sized
babies.

Ease
of getting baby in and out of the carrier. All of our
testers were impressed with the 3-point restraint strap system.
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to extract a sleeping (or
screaming!) infant from a carrier and struggling with confusing
straps and buckles. One tester even related a horrifying story of
accidentally slapping her newborn in the face while attempting to
pull apart an awkward carseat carrier seatbelt! No worries with
the See Shell.. it takes only a one-handed thumb to index finger
pinch to undo the single buckle. Even our grandma tester said it
was "obvious and simple". And since the unbuckled
harness divides into three separate straps, there is no need to
lift anything over baby's head. You can easily remove a sleeping
baby without upset!
|
|
Simple
cleaning. Babies can be messy little people! Between spit-up and
strained peas, carriers that get used are carriers that must be cleaned.
Our testers liked the easy wipe up of the plastic exterior. The seat pad,
made from polyfoam sewn into a cotton/polyester fabric cover, removes
quickly for stain removal with warm water and a mild detergent.
So there you have it! Three cheers to Sharon Abendschoen
for inventing, patenting, and producing her dream of a lightweight and
comfortable carrier for babies! The See Shell Baby Carrier is now
immediately available for order and shipment via the See Shell Products
website and through select retailers.
